Common Mistakes Made By Accident Victims

Many auto accident victims say or do things that end up damaging their case. The steps that you take immediately following your injury can affect what type of compensation you recover from the negligent person who injured you. If you make certain mistakes, you may permanently hurt your case.

If you have been injured in a car or truck accident, review these tips in order to make sure you don't damage your case. Even if you have made one of these mistakes, bring it up with your attorney and they may be able to help you out.

  1. Always call the police.

    • Do not agree with the other driver that you can handle things just between yourselves. Without a police accident report, you don't have any proof that the other driver was at fault. That "nice" other driver can turn around and claim that the accident was your fault! Always make sure you get the police to come out and file an official accident report.

  2. Get witness contact information immediately.

    • If there are any witnesses to the accident, make sure that you talk to them and get their contact information. The more witnesses you have on your side the better your case.

  3. Recorded statements? No thanks!

    • If the insurance company asks you to give a recorded statement, politely decline and call your attorney.

  4. Don't accept a quick settlement.

    • If an insurance company offers you a quick settlement with little or no argument, it can be tempting to take the money without question. The problem is that it is impossible to know how much is fair before you know the full extent of your injuries.
